Dean McCartney's  personal photographs respond to the faces and places that have inspired, bored and scared him from the red lights of St.Kilda to the bright lights of Sydney and the soft light of the Hawkesbury River.

Dean McCartney expanded his still photography practice in 2010 to incorporate cinematography & video editing that has now formed a central part of his work.

2011 Nationlal Portrait Prize: The judges  commended James by Dean McCartney, an incredible photograph of a baby immediately after birth.

"The most powerful and dramatic evocation of coming into life that I've ever seen," Ms Engledow said.

She said the image is proof that even a baby can be a viable portrait subject. In his first breath the viewer can see power and character in James's face as he comes roaring into life.
